Welcome to the New Market Historical Society

Our goal is to tell Newmarket’s story, preserve its local artifacts, and sponsor historical events and educational opportunities.  Please consult our program of events for exact dates, times, and locations for our meetings and events as they have recently changed. 

The public is always welcome to attend our educational meetings, which are free except for select special events.

Donations are always welcomed and greatly appreciated!

 Newmarket Town Hall

Meet some of Newmarket’s standout sisters as we saunter through the distaff side of our town’s history.

Are they sweet?  Sometimes…  Sensational?  Surely… Solemn? Studious? Secretive? Certainly!

What they all are is SASSY –”fresh, impertinent, overbold, smart”  (Vocabulary.com).

Stepping out of the shadows of husbands and fathers, these women star in stories that add sparkle to Newmarket’s past.

  Historical Society Board member (and local Sassy Lass) Pam Myers-Morgan introduces over a dozen Newmarket women, uncovering true tales of innovation, scandal, fecundity, madness, murder, and, yas… SASS!

The 2024 Season is Announced

 Newmarket’s 300th Celebration

Planning Now for 2027

Members of the Newmarket 300 Steering Commitee are preparing for the town’s 300th celebration scheduled for 2027. 

The Committee seeks input from the public as they plan this event.

 The next meeting is Wednesday, June 4th , 6-7 pm at Sunrise Sunset Center behind the Police Station.   

 As always , any interested individual, business or organizational representative is welcome to attend on the 20th.

The Town of Newfields celebrates its  175th anniversay with a week-long series of events.

The Town seperated from Newmarket in 1849, and was known as South Newmarket.

In 1895 the Town took the name “Newfields” — originally given to the  plantation in 1629  by settler Edward Hilton.
